Tips on How to Clean Your Washing Machine

Washing machines are designed to take your dirty clothes and clean them, leaving you with fresh, nice smelling clothing. But, you washer needs to be kept clean in order to produce clean results. This article will discuss some tips for keeping your clothing and your washing machine clean.

For starters, how often should you clean your washer? It is recommended that it be cleaned monthly. In an article titled, "Your Washing Machine Can't Clean Itself -- Here's How to Make It Shine" written by Liz Alterman, she discusses some cleaning tips as quoted below:
"You can do that by using the soak setting and adding straight vinegar to the water," she says. "Let it sit for a few hours and the acid in the vinegar will work on the buildup in the system. Then, run it through a regular cycle and the drum should be free from buildup."

Got one area that's in need of a scrubbing? Reichert has the solution.

"If you have a particular spot that has a lot of 'gunk,' I use a sponge and baking soda and sea salt mixed together to scrub it off. Rinse the area with nice hot water."

Some people like to clean their washing machine in an all-green manner. This can certainly be accomplished and going green will lessen the impact that harsh chemicals have on the washer. The following section is a quote from "Clean Your [Top Loading] Washer Naturally", an article that gives step by step instructions on how to clean a top-loading washing machine using green products.
Two common household ingredients are needed for this project. White vinegar and baking soda to the rescue! The vinegar will disinfect, helping kill mold and mildew. The acidity of the vinegar will help dissolve soap residue in the wash tub and can also be helpful in dissolving lime deposits in pipes (if you have hard water). The baking soda cleans soap scum and deodorizes if you have SWS (stinky washer syndrome).

Using baking soda and vinegar are great ways to clean the inside of your washer without the heavy chemicals that are found in some of today's cleaning products. And, these ingredients are more than capable of killing mold and mildew as well as reducing or eliminating bad odors.

Have a front loading machine? No worries, you can use the same ingredients to clean your front loader. In an article published on PopSugar.com titled, "How to Clean Your Front-Loading Washing Machine", the author describes how to clean your front loading washer. One key element is to let the machine do the heavy lifting as described in this quoted segment;

Add the baking soda mixture to the detergent container of your machine and pour the vinegar into the drum. Set your washer to normal load at the hottest water setting. Close the door and start the machine, letting it do all the hard work for you. The baking soda and vinegar naturally break up mineral deposits and any mold growth while cleaning and refreshing your washing machine.
